The cost of travel insurance may not be putting British tourists off their holidays as many say they view getting away as a "necessity rather than a luxury".
Home and car insurance may take priority, as buying a house or vehicle are people's biggest expenses, however the second biggest expenditure is usually a holiday, the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) claims.
Furthermore, the organisation believes that the recession and concerns about interest rates and redundancies are even more of an encouragement for people to go on holiday.
AITO public relations officer Ian Bradley said: "They put money aside and say: I'm going to get away, no matter what, I need to escape the doom and gloom."
An online survey conducted by kayak.co.uk recently found that taking at least one holiday a year was important for 90 per cent of respondents.
