Research by the AA claims that the Tuesday after the bank holiday is expected to be the busiest day for breakdowns.
Breakdown cover is used more often when motorists return to work after the bank holiday and figures from the AA show the service received over 62,000 breakdown calls last August.
The AA expects this number to fall by around 4,000 this year as the credit crunch could see more drivers leave their cars in the garage.
Although motorists are expected to drive fewer miles than usual over the long weekend, Andy Taylor, winner of the AA Patrol of the Year, said that the roads will "still be busier than your typical weekend".
As it is the last bank holiday before Christmas, people may make "some last minute plans and the roads could get very busy", he added.
Mr Taylor is advising drivers to make "careful preparations for their journey", such as having the correct breakdown cover.
In a report titled Breakdown Britain it was claimed that three-quarters of RAC patrols believe that the decreasing quality of UK roads is leading to an increase in breakdowns. Compare prices from lots of breakdown insurance websites with our breakdown cover quote system.
