Tyre tread important when driving on wet roads

With the UK experiencing higher levels of summer rain than usual, it is vitally important that motorists stay safe on wet roads by checking their tyre treads.

Road safety firm Tyre Safe has recommended that drivers carry out the simple test of inserting a 20p piece into the tread to check its depth. If the outer band of the coin is visible, then they may not be safe enough and require closer inspection from a specialist.

This easy test can mean that drivers will not end up losing their no-claims bonus after making an expensive car insurance claim.

Having the right depth on tread is important for maintaining grip as it helps to take water from the road surface. If the right level of tread is not there, then motorists risk an accident due to longer stopping distances and the increased likelihood of aquaplaning.

"Tyre safety is about protecting the ones you love, as well as having respect for other road users. However, if that’s not enough to spur people into action and to regularly check their tyres all year round, then the heavy fines for driving with illegal tyres certainly is," said Stuart Jackson, chairman of TyreSafe.ADNFCR-1789-ID-801399530-ADNFCR
