People living in London and south-east England are the more likely to submit fraudulent applications for credit than anyone else in Britain, according to new research.
A study carried out by fraud prevention service Cifas revealed that the top districts for fraudsters include Croyden, Plumstead, Barking and Tottenham.
Cifas research Sandra Peaston said that while it was not unusual to have high levels of fraudulent activity in cities, it was "remarkable" that almost all of the UK's fraudsters were centred in or around London.
"Many elements conspire to make this the hub of activity for fraudsters, not least because they may feel that the population density affords anonymity. Years ago, that might have been true, but fraud data sharing has put an end to that.
"It is also true to say that London is a city of stark contrast where extraordinarily wealthy and socially disadvantaged people often live in close proximity," she added.
Bank accounts and credit cards are said to be the most popular targets for criminals, while fraudulent applications for mortgages and mobile phone contracts are also regularly submitted.
A study by Cifas earlier this year revealed that fraudulent activity increased by ten per cent in the first quarter of 2008.
