When it comes to the cost of petrol, British motorists are forking out an average of 20 per cent more than their European counterparts.
According to new research from uSwitch, the average UK driver spends £1,753 annually at the pumps.
It emerged that Spanish drivers pay just 96p per litre for their fuel, compared to the average British motorist who pays £1.19 per litre.
Commenting on the findings, Mark Monteiro of uSwich said: "Cash-strapped consumers are juggling price increases across all fronts. Petrol prices are yet another rising cost to contend with adding further strain to already stretched finances.
"As a direct result of these high prices it would be no surprise to see motorists leaving their cars at home and using other methods of transport."
However, Mr Monteiro noted that leaving the car at home was simply not an option for many drivers and suggested that those in remote areas were the worst affected.
Meanwhile, the rising cost of fuel is not the only expense that drivers are facing. The AA's Insurance Premium Index from the first quarter of 2008 revealed that the average motorist currently pays £682 for comprehensive car insurance cover.
