Research carried out by Halifax Home Insurance has found that the most stereotypical hiding place for valuables is under the bed.
Homeowners will also hide items in the sock draw and on top of the wardrobe, while the fourth most favoured place is in the bedside table.
Of the people that took part in the research almost one-quarter admitted to still using these four places to hide their treasured possessions.
David Rochester from Halifax Home Insurance stated that the findings are "proof we need to get smarter" when it comes to defending our possessions.
"Safes are a good idea as these allow your possessions to be locked away. Opening a safe would be time consuming for a thief, or difficult to transport, therefore making the thief think twice about taking it," he added.
Research by budget hotel chain Travelodge also indicated that 21 per cent of women have admitted hiding dirty dishes underneath their bed.
