Uninsured drivers 'should face harsher penalties'

Direct Line has called for an urgent review of penalties for all drivers without car insurance.

The comments come hot on the heels of new laws that could see careless drivers who cause a fatality jailed for up to five years.

Maggie Game, head of car insurance at Direct Line, said the company "welcomes the new laws" but feels that the measures "do not go enough to combat the threat of uninsured drivers on our roads".

"Uninsured drivers are far more likely to be young and have prior driving convictions," she added.

According to Ms Game, accidents involving uninsured drivers result in the loss of approximately 200 lives every year but, during the last ten years, the average fines for such an offence have fallen from £224 to £185.

There are estimated to be around 1.5 million uninsured drivers in the UK and current rules impose a maximum fine of £5,000 but no custodial sentence.
