Uninsured driving figures fall as more are caught out

UK motorists who do not have car insurance UK are now more likely to be caught out, which could be the reason for a reduced number of those driving without protection on the roads.

According to the Association of British Insurers (ABI), there is an increased likelihood that people may have their car impounded or even crushed if they are stopped by the police and found to be driving without insurance.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesperson for the ABI, said: "It does correspond with the current industry figures which shows that the level of uninsured driving has fallen encouragingly; slight but encouragingly from five to around 4.7 per cent of the total driving population."

He also reminded anyone thinking of taking a risk and not getting car insurance that if they are caught they may never be able to obtain cover in the future.

Figures published by the Motor Insurer's Bureau revealed that police seized around 150,000 uninsured cars last year, 40 per cent of which were crushed or disposed of.
