One unlucky holidaymaker has been left with a bill of £77,000 after contracting pneumonia while on holiday in the US, Insurefor.com has reported.
The 85-year-old male was left with the hefty bill after failing to take out a travel insurance policy that could have paid for his medical and repatriation expenses.
In the survey, Insurefor.com found that holidaymakers are increasingly not taking out travel insurance in an effort to save a few pounds.
Antony Martin, managing director of Insurefor.com, said: "Why anyone would travel without insurance is beyond my comprehension. Policies start from under £5 per person which when compared to the costs clients could incur without insurance is very low."
Research released in July by Norwich Union revealed that 51 per cent of UK travellers are considering foregoing travel insurance this year because of the worsening economic situation.
According to the insurer, the typical medical emergency claim costs approximately £1,200 while the average baggage claim can reach figures of around £220.
