It has been revealed that more people are hopping on their bike and cycling around this summer.

However, they have been urged by Halifax to ensure that their household insurance is up to date as this has also lead to an increase in bicycle theft.

The contents insurance provider states that bike theft increased by seven per cent in the summer of last, ad the average cost to an owner if £350.

Martin Foulds, senior claims manager for Halifax Home Insurance, said that although bikes are stored away some types of locks are not enough of a deterrent.

"We anticipate that this year bike thefts may be on the up as warmer weather prevails, people look for ways to economise, and domestic burglary generally increases," he added.

More Than has also encouraged homeowners to protect the contents of their garden and consider installing measures such as gates, fences and gravel driveways.
