Police officers are set to be shopping around for van insurance policies after the introduction of a new vehicle to their fleets.
Northumbria Police have opted for a number of Peugeot Boxers to help improve their street presence and enable them to efficiently control crowds.
Fleet manager Keith Wilson explained that the model was the ideal choice because of its ability to carry large loads.
"These vehicles frequently operate fully laden and carry nine police officers, so it's important that they are comfortable to travel in and handle safely on the road," added Mr Wilson.
The vans have been upgraded in order to suit their new task and fitted with strengthened bodywork, tyres and glass. While onboard they have been adapted to fit first aid kits, helmets and protective shields.
Meanwhile, leading van maker Iveco has announced its adoption of the government's scrappage scheme as part of a plan to improve current sales.
