People who download music from the internet may find that collections stored on their computers are not properly covered by their home insurance.
Virgin Money has warned that not all household and contents cover will protect downloaded tracks as some insurers class them as data files. They will only be insured if the provider considers them to be personal possessions.
Grant Bather, spokesman at Virgin Money, said: "More people are choosing to download music and films and as such, their computer will have a lot of information on it that if stolen, could be lost forever." He continued by urging people to check that their files will be covered should their computer or laptop be damaged or stolen.
Students with PCs and expensive games consoles are one of the groups at risk as LV= has revealed that university towns in the UK are most likely to be burgled.
