New research has shown that 38 per cent of damage caused by children in the home was to paintwork or wallpaper.

The second most common form of breakages by kids was to furniture and chairs, which accounted for 31 per cent of all damage to property, according to research from Abbey Insurance.

Broken ornaments and similar items came in at third in the pecking order in the survey and Tony Beckwith, head of Santander Insurance UK, has urged parents and carers to ensure the home is adequately protected against accidental damages.

Mr Beckwith stated that 39 per cent of adults pay for any breakages around the home and with the school holidays in full swing he is advising "anyone looking after children this summer to try and avoid this by ensuring they have the proper cover on their home insurance, including any additional full accidental damage options required on their policies".

Spanish bank Santander is the sixth-largest in the UK and operates in the country through Abeby National. Abbey provides a range of mortgages, savings accounts and insurance to 18 million customers.
