Young male drivers are paying more for their car insurance premiums than females are, according to new figures from AA Insurance.
Since 2003 the cost of cover for young men has risen steeply while for women it has continued to fall, widening the gap to 59 per cent.
Despite the fact that the number of people being killed or injured on the UK's roads is falling, the amount of accidents involving men under the age of 21 is still high.
Figures from the Department of Transport show that 29.1 per cent of accidents are accounted for by under 25-year olds, 63.4 per cent of which are men.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, explained that "insurance premiums are based on claims experience and the unfortunate facts are that men aged under 21 are 10 times more likely to have an accident than men aged 35 or more".
Last month the AA welcomed new laws allowing courts to imprison motorists who cause death by not paying due care and attention when they are on the road.
