Younger drivers are likely to pay for more for repairs than older motorists because they have an increased amount of bad driving habits, it has been found.
This could also mean they end up paying more for their car insurance as they could be more likely to have an accident.
Research commissioned by Tesco Car Warranty found that 43 per cent of younger drivers admit that they drive with one hand on the gear stick while a third say they often ride the clutch which can cause wear and tear resulting in an £800 repair bill.
Allan Burns, head of insurance at Tesco Personal Finance, said: "Our survey has revealed that while some motorists admit to poor habits, many are unaware of the cost implications this could have."
Around 15 per cent of motorists in the 24 to 35-year old age group say they sometimes drive in the wrong gear which can cause engine damage.
Last month the AA said that fewer firms are willing to give third party, fire and theft car insurance to young drivers.
