You may require tradesman insurance if you are a tradesman who works in clients homes or offices.

When you’re self-employed, there are very few guarantees, which is why it’s crucial to have tradesman insurance that you can trust. But if you’re not sure about what you need or what to look for, here’s our handy guide that explains exactly what you should consider.

What is gas fitter insurance?

Gas fitter insurance covers you for the risks and hazards you face if you work with gas appliances or install gas fittings – for example if you’re a heating engineer, plumber or electrician.

Policies can cover you for stolen tools, damaged equipment and even cover your legal costs if you need to settle a dispute in court. Not having a policy means having to meet these costs yourself, placing your business at unnecessary financial risk.

What does gas engineer insurance include?

Like other types of business insurance, policies are a combination of several different types of cover. In most cases, insurers will offer a standard package and give you the option of adding on extra features in order to create a bespoke policy that fits your business needs exactly.

Policies often include a combination of these types of insurance:

  • Gas engineer public liability insurance – covers legal fees and compensation claims if a member of the public decides to sue you for injury or damage to their property. Levels of cover vary by insurer but often range from £1 million up to as much as £10 million. Generally speaking, the larger or more complicated the projects you work on, the more cover you’re likely to need. If you’re hoping to bid for work with a local authority, it’s worth knowing that you’ll usually be expected to have at least £5 million worth of cover.
  • Employers’ liability insurance – compensates employees if they’re injured or become sick through work. By law, you must have a minimum of £5 million worth of cover if you have any staff (including part-time and temporary workers). If you need but don’t have employers’ liability, you could be fined £2,500 each day you go without it.
  • Tools and equipment insurance – covers the cost of stolen or damaged tools and equipment. In most cases, policies will also cover hired equipment but always double check the terms of your policy.
  • Personal accident insurance – compensates you for lost income and covers medical costs if you have an accident and can’t work.
  • Legal expenses – covers legal and court costs if you need to defend yourself or take action against someone else.
  • Business buildings and contents insurance – covers the cost of damage done to your business premises and its contents.
  • Contract works insurance – compensates you for any unfinished work you have to re-install because it’s been damaged.
Does my gas fitter insurance cover all types of properties?

It depends on the terms and conditions set out in your policy so read the small print just to be sure. While some policies may cover you to work on both domestic and commercial properties, there may be certain conditions. For example, commercial property could be limited to small shops, restaurants or offices under a certain square footage.

If you work on much larger commercial properties or work anywhere that could be considered hazardous – like at power stations, you may well need to ask for additional cover. If in doubt, always ask your insurer for advice.

How much does gas engineer insurance cost?

Policies are tailored to your needs so price can vary considerably depending on the features you choose and the levels of cover you opt for.

When it comes to comparing policies, bear in mind that cheap gas engineer insurance might not be the bargain it appears to be. Cheaper policies may not include all the features you need, which means adding them at extra cost. Limits might also be low and the excess (the amount you contribute to a claim) could be high.

On the other hand, policies that initially seem expensive, might offer more comprehensive cover, providing better all-round value.

So, before you make a decision based on price alone, make sure the policy you choose has all the features you need along with appropriate levels of cover and an affordable excess.
