Compare cheap professional cleaning insurance quotes with Quotezone.co.uk

You may require tradesman insurance if you are a tradesman who works in clients homes or offices.

Being entrusted to clean someone’s home comes with a huge amount of responsibility so if an accident does happen, it’s important to have insurance that you can rely on. At Quotezone.co.uk, we work with a panel of trusted insurers so you can be confident about getting the support you need, when you need it most – here’s what to think about.

I’m a self-employed cleaner, do I need insurance?

If you’re self-employed then it’s certainly wise to have insurance, as a policy can give you financial help if something goes wrong – for example if you accidently damaged a costly TV or your cleaning equipment was stolen. Policies can also cover the cost of legal fees if you need to defend yourself against a claim in court.

Not having cleaner insurance puts your business at financial risk as you’d have to cover these types of expenses yourself – which could cost you thousands of pounds.

What does cleaner insurance UK include?

Like other types of business cover, policies for cleaners are a combination of several different types of insurance. In most cases, insurers will offer a basic package and give you the opportunity to add on extra features – giving you the flexibility to tailor a package to suit your exact needs.

Typically, you can expect your cleaner insurance to include one or more of the following:

  • Public liability insurance for cleaners – pays legal fees and compensation if a member of the public decides to sue you for injury or damage to their property. For example, if you accidently knocked over a valuable vase belonging to your client and they sought compensation.
  • Employers’ liability insurance – covers the cost of compensation if an employee is injured or becomes sick because of work. You’ll need this by law if you employ any staff, even part-time or temporary workers.
  • Tools and equipment insurance – covers the cost of repairing or replacing damaged or stolen tools or equipment, for instance carpet or vacuum cleaners. If you work from home and keep equipment there, always double check whether your home contents policy covers your business equipment. In most cases, it’s unlikely that you will be insured but you might be able to extend cover for a small increase in your premium.
  • Personal accident insurance – compensates you for lost income and covers medical costs if you have an accident and can’t work.
  • Legal expenses – covers legal fees and court expenses if you need to settle a dispute.
  • Business buildings and contents insurance – if you work out of an office, this covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding it if it’s damaged or destroyed. Similarly, contents cover will compensate you for items that need to be replaced because of an insured event like a fire, flood or theft.
What level of self-employed cleaner insurance do I need?

Levels of cover vary depending on the type of insurance – for example cover for tools and equipment is usually set by the insurer.

Cover for public liability insurance often ranges from £1 million up to as much as £10 million and it’s up to you to assess what your business might need. To give you an idea, contractors working for local authorities are expected to have a minimum of £5 million worth of public liability cover.

If you need employers’ liability insurance, the amount you need is set by law – currently, you must have at least £5 million worth. If you don’t have employers’ liability (but need it) you face a £2,500 fine for each day you’re uninsured.

How much does cleaning business insurance cost?

Cost depends on a whole host of factors – such as the policy you buy, the levels of cover you choose and whether or not you add on any extra features.

Premiums are also affected by your claims history, so making lots of claims can increase what you end up paying. That’s not to say you shouldn’t ever make a claim but think carefully about what you claim for.

It’s also important to bear in mind that cheaper policies might not be the bargain they appear to be. You may find you need to add on extras or increase levels of cover – both of which are likely to increase what you pay. In contrast, policies that initially seem expensive could be offering more comprehensive cover and represent better long-term value.
With that in mind, it’s vital to compare policy features as well as consider any exclusions (events that aren’t covered) before you make a final decision.
