Mercedes Benz produces automobiles, buses, coaches and trucks and is currently owned by Daimler Chrysler. Mercedes Benz is the world's oldest car manufacturer and primary competition includes many other famous marquee names such as BMW, Cadillac, Jaguar, Audi, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti and also Lincoln.

The origin of the Mercedes company and car dates back to the 1880s, when Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz invented the internal combustion engine-powered automobile independently, in southwestern Germany. After partnerships with Daimler and other companies the Mercedes Benz name emerged in the late 1920s.

Many people may not know the meaning of the three-point its star that has been part of the Mercedes Benz marquee for almost 100 years. The three-point star was added in 1909 to show the ability of the Mercedes Benz motors for land, air and sea usage. The Laurel was added in 1926 to symbolize the Union of the Mercedes and Benz firms. The ring was added in 1937. The company itself dates back to the 1880s when the internal combustion engine powered automobile was first invented.
Mercedes-Benz also has had difficult times in history. During the second world war, Mercedes-Benz exploited more than 30,000 forced workers and POWs to work on construction in support of Nazi Germanys Luftwaffe and war machine.

Mercedes-Benz vehicles have traditionally focused on high quality and state of the art engineering for their cars and have been a manufacturer to watch. They have often been expensive and Mercedes has carefully created an image of superior engineering, quality, and service. Mercedes cars are often chosen by the rich and famous. Their cars have been known and watched for the introduction of advanced technologies and usually have led the industry with new technology introduction.

Two examples are fuel injection which have become standard on many cars today and also antilock braking systems which are also standard on many high end cars. Unfortunately with competition, the Mercedes-Benz brand has suffered in the recent past and the brand's reputation of reliability has been called into question. The company has invested heavily in recent years to correct these problems.

Mercedes-Benz also produces buses, vans and trucks as well as engines for use in a variety of vehicles. Mercedes-Benz buses are produced mainly for Europe and Asia. Currently Mercedes-Benz produces a range of vans consisting of the Mercedes-Benz Vito, which is a light van, based on the Viano MPV and can handle the load weight of approximately one ton. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a midsize van with loaded weight of two to six tons. The Mercedes-Benz Vario is a heavy van with similar load to the light truck of 7.5 tons.
