How much it will cost footie fans to travel next season
23/06/2025

Newcastle United’s loyal fans are set to cover more miles than any other fanbase once again in the Premier League next season.
Quotezone.co.uk compiled the data across the 380 matches to see how far fans will have to travel and just how much it will cost them.
The research sees the Toon Army top the table, covering almost double the distance that Aston Villa fans will have to travel to cover off every Premier League match.
The North East club are no strangers to having to travel long distances to games, and the 2025/26 season will be no different – although they do have a short 30-mile round trip to local rivals Sunderland to enjoy this season after their Championship play-off final victory.
Toon Army fans will rack up a total of 8,348 miles* on the road supporting their team across the country, with European football to add to that as well.
Sunderland fans won’t be far behind either, clocking up 8,138 miles as they return to the Premier League for the first time since the 2016/17 season.
Among the longest Premier League 2025/26 away fixtures, south coast fans also face plenty of miles – Bournemouth face 7,296 miles while fans of Brighton & Hove Albion have 6,890 miles to travel to make sure they don’t miss out on the action.
It should come as no surprise that the longest single trip in the Premier League is between Newcastle and Bournemouth – with fans facing a gruelling 696-mile round trip.
But there has been a change to the shortest single trip in the 2025/26 season. Traditionally between Everton and Liverpool, Chelsea and Fulham fans now take this honour with a 3.6-mile round trip in West London.
Everton’s move away from their home at Goodison Park to a brand-new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock means fans of both Merseyside clubs now face a 3.8-mile round trip.
At the other end of the table, fans of Midlands-based clubs can breathe a sigh of relief thanks to their central location.
Aston Villa fans sit bottom of the table with only 4,600 miles to travel next season, followed by fans of Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers with 4,756 miles and 4,823 miles to travel respectively.
Travelling to away games by car is the preferred travel choice for approximately 40% of football fans, with a large proportion of those car sharing.**
But just how much is this unwavering support costing the fans.
The team at Quotezone researched just how much each set of fans will potentially have to fork out on petrol to visit every one of their matches in the Premier League.
For the Toon Army in the top spot, 8,348 miles would cost approximately £1608, followed by £1581 for Sunderland and £1418 for Bournemouth.
The least expensive is still almost a grand, with Aston fans looking at a cost of £894 on petrol costs to drive to all matches next season.
Quotezone CEO and car insurance expert Greg Wilson said: “With another exciting season ahead, loyal fans will once again be clocking up thousands of miles up and down the country.
“It’s important for drivers to think about ways they could find savings, the Toon Army are looking at a petrol bill of roughly £1608 to cover 8,348 miles so shopping around for the cheapest petrol stations and even plotting the journey to include cheaper stations on the way is sensible.
“Also, making the car as light as possible and checking the tyres are well inflated can all help make the fuel go further and help find some savings.
“Clocking up extra miles potentially impacts car insurance premiums too, if fans are exceeding their annual mileage estimates it could up their premium costs or even invalidate their insurance – so it’s a good time to review policies and update insurers if necessary ahead of the new season.”
Designated drivers also need to remember they are responsible for everything happening inside the vehicle. Overloading the car, blocking the view, or letting passengers behave irresponsibly could all put the insurance and other road users at risk – if someone’s keen to display the club flag across the rear window, it’s best to save it for the stands – not the back seat.
