Broadband & Mobile Expert

Who is Piers Murray?

Piers Murray is Quotezone’s Broadband & Mobile Expert with deep knowledge of the UK telecoms market. He specialises in broadband and mobile phone comparisons, helping consumers cut through the complexity of fibre packages, mobile contracts and bundle deals to find better value. Piers holds a BA (Hons) in English Language and Literature from the University of Leeds and an Artificial Intelligence Programme certificate from Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

Day-to-day Piers works with broadband ISPs, mobile network operators and MVNOs across the UK, building Quotezone’s telecoms comparison panel. That includes navigating fibre vs ADSL availability by postcode, SIM-only vs handset-included contract comparisons, the cost difference between in-contract and out-of-contract pricing, and the typical traps in advertised broadband speeds. The goal is straightforward: help UK households cut their broadband and mobile bills without ending up locked into a deal that doesn’t fit how they actually use the connection.

As part of his role, Piers undertakes regular professional development and compliance training through accredited learning programmes delivered by Skillcast, covering key regulatory and industry topics including Consumer Duty, the FCA’s Senior Managers & Certification Regime (SM&CR), Conduct Risk, Financial Crime prevention, Data Protection, customer vulnerability, conflicts of interest and Treating Customers Fairly. He also ensures Quotezone’s broadband and mobile comparison products remain aligned with Ofcom’s General Conditions of Entitlement, end-of-contract notification rules, and ASA advertising standards on broadband speed and pricing claims.

Piers’s expert insights

On out-of-contract broadband prices

“The single biggest mistake UK broadband customers make is staying on their initial deal once it ends. Out-of-contract prices are often 50% or more above the new-customer rate for the same service. Ofcom’s end-of-contract notification rules mean your provider has to warn you when you’re about to roll off the deal, but you still have to act on it. Comparing alternatives at every notification is the easiest way to bring the monthly bill back down.”

On postcode-based fibre availability

“Don’t pay full-fibre prices for a connection that isn’t actually full fibre. Many providers still advertise ‘fibre broadband’ for FTTC packages that use copper for the last leg into the home. True full-fibre (FTTP) is faster and more reliable but is only available in some UK postcodes. Before signing up, check what’s actually available at your address.”

On SIM-only vs handset-included contracts

“For most consumers, buying the handset outright and taking a SIM-only contract works out cheaper than a combined contract. The combined contract spreads the handset cost into the monthly bill at an effective interest rate that can run into double figures. If you can afford the handset upfront, you’ll usually save over the two-year term.”

On broadband speed claims

“Advertised broadband speeds are ‘up to’ figures, often only achieved by a minority of customers in a small window. The number to focus on is the guaranteed minimum speed your provider quotes for your specific postcode. If your real-world speed drops below that minimum, ASA rules give you a right to leave the contract penalty-free or have the price reduced.”
