If you still have questions, read on to find out the key things to look at when taking out life insurance for expats.

How has expat life insurance changed?

In the past, securing life insurance for Brits living abroad wasn’t too easy. British expats found they could only secure life insurance policies with a maximum term of 10 years, after which they had to reapply, usually paying more each time.

But now many insurers offer longer terms. If you shop around, you may find many premiums are falling in line with those that you’d expect to pay as a UK resident.

In addition, British expats can now obtain life insurance that covers their UK mortgage. They now have the option to purchase whole of life cover, as well as decreasing life cover and level life cover. Terms can cover up to 40 years.

What are the requirements for updated life insurance for expats?

A British expat must meet at least one of the following criteria to apply for the latest type of expats life insurance:

  • A mortgage on a house in the UK
  • Ownership of a business located and registered in the UK
  • A financially dependent family member, such as a child or spouse, who lives in the UK
  • An inheritance tax liability within the UK.

Will the insurer providing my expat life insurance be based in the UK?

At Quotezone we compare quotes from UK companies providing expat insurance. You’ll be able to liaise and deal with your paperwork in English, even if you’re living abroad.

What should an expat life insurance policy include?

When you are a citizen of one country but live in another, there may be additional considerations when thinking about life insurance.

In addition to needing the policy to pay off outstanding debts, your family may also need a lump sum to cope financially. An individual may die in a foreign country, but wish to be buried back in the UK. You may need to pay for the repatriation of the body.

Some expats select a policy which covers a child concierge system. This can be helpful if the policyholder dies and leaves children without family in a foreign country.
