Superb service

Tried the others several times and some offering gimicky freebys that most people will never use. Tried Quotezone, they offered straight forward price comparisons, one of which I am now using.

High-top Camper Insurance

Travelling in a campervan offers the best of both worlds – giving you the chance to see the sights but with all your home comforts around you. But when you’re out and about, it’s important to have peace of mind, which is where campervan insurance can help. So, if you’re on holiday in your high-top camper, here’s what to consider when it comes to cover.

What counts as a high-top campervan?

There are all sorts of campervans and motorhomes to choose from. What’s right for you will depend on how many of you are travelling, where you like to go and what kind of creature comforts you like to enjoy.

High-top campers can either be soft, extendable tops or fixed roofs, either way, there’s a plethora to choose from. One of the main advantages of a high-top, is of course the extra headroom. While space is clearly still limited to the size of the campervan, it does at least mean you can stand up properly.

When you search for high-top campervan insurance, you’ll need to let your provider know exactly what type of roof your camper has as this could affect the cost of cover.

What does high top campervan insurance include?

Like other types of motorhome and campervan cover, you’ll be able to choose from one of three levels of cover:

  • Third-party only – compensates other people for injury or damage you cause. This is the lowest level of cover you can have by law, but you should also bear in mind, that it doesn’t cover damage to your campervan.
  • Third-party, fire and theft – includes third-party only and will also pay out if your camper is stolen or damaged by fire.
  • Comprehensive cover – provides third-party, fire and theft cover and will also pay to repair or replace your camper if it’s damaged in an accident.

Policies will also usually include a number of other features – for instance, windscreen cover and legal expenses. If they aren’t included as standard within your package, you’ll be able to add them on for a small fee.

How much does it cost to insure a high-top camper?

The cost of cover really depends on your needs so policy prices can vary considerably. To work out your premium, insurers will take into account a range of factors, including:

  • Age – younger drivers under 25 pay higher than average premiums as they’re more likely to be involved in an accident.
  • Driving history – convicted drivers with penalty points will pay more for cover.
  • Claims history – claims made in the last five years typically increase your premium.
  • Mileage – covering lots of miles means there’s a greater risk of being in an accident which can result in higher insurance costs.
  • Security – parking your camper somewhere secure like a locked garage can shave a little off your premium. If that’s not feasible, good alternatives include an immobiliser or security alarm.
How can I cut the cost of high-top campervan insurance?

If you’ve bought a camper to save money on holidays, it can be tempting to choose the cheapest cover but that doesn’t always mean you’re getting the best value. Cheaper policies might not give you the cover you need, and you may find yourself adding on optional extras that drive up the price considerably.

Nevertheless, there are ways to lower the cost of insurance, including:

  • Paying for your policy annually instead of monthly.
  • Limiting the number of miles you do, which cuts the risk of being involved in an accident.
  • Increasing your voluntary excess. If you decide to do this, check that it’s still affordable because you’ll need to pay it before a claim can go ahead.
  • Boosting your campervan’s security.
  • Adding a more experienced, named driver to your policy.
