Cover for DJs usually starts with public liability, for claims if a guest is injured or a venue is damaged while you play. Most working DJs then add protection for their decks, speakers, lights and laptop.
With Quotezone you complete a single form and UK providers come back with prices, whether you play weddings, bars, clubs or festivals.
What does DJ insurance usually cover?
There is no single standard policy, so most DJs build cover from a few separate sections. The ones you are most likely to be offered are set out below, and you can usually leave out what you do not need.
- Public liability: if a dancer trips over a speaker cable or a stand falls onto a guest, this pays the injury or damage claim (business.gov.uk).
- Equipment: theft of, or damage to, your kit at gigs, at home and on the road. business.gov.uk lists equipment cover separately from liability (business.gov.uk).
- Employers’ liability: once a helper or roadie works for you as an employee, the law expects you to hold it, with £5 million as the minimum (GOV.UK).
- Personal accident or legal costs: optional extras some insurers add for a small premium.
Read how each insurer defines “in transit”, whether cash taken at a gig is included, and whether gigs abroad are covered.
Do DJs need public liability insurance?
The law does not make a self-employed DJ buy it, but plenty of venues and councils refuse bookings without it. The business.gov.uk site lists a venue or client contract that demands it as one reason to take public liability (business.gov.uk).
Councils can set their own minimum. North Somerset Council asks event organisers to check that entertainers on its land carry their own public liability of at least £5 million (North Somerset Council, checked November 2026).

Cover for decks, speakers and lighting
A full mobile rig can be worth more than the car that carries it, and it is loaded in and out several times a week. When you line up quotes, look at three things:
- Locations: is the kit covered at the venue, at home and in a locked vehicle, or only in some of those places?
- Vehicle rules: many insurers attach conditions to kit left in a car or van overnight, such as keeping it out of sight in a locked boot.
- Values: list each item at what it would cost to replace today, since a low figure can cut what a claim pays.
Driving to gigs brings in your motor policy too. Third party cover is the legal minimum for driving on UK roads (GOV.UK), and your motor insurer should know you use the car for paid work.
Mobile, wedding and club DJs
A mobile DJ brings a sound system and lighting into a hotel, hall or marquee. That means more kit to protect and more cables, stands and trusses that a guest could walk into, so DJ insurance for a mobile setup usually needs higher equipment values.
A resident club DJ often plugs into the venue’s own system. The club’s policy protects its building, but your own liability and any controllers or laptops you bring remain yours to insure.
Wedding venues may ask for proof of cover months before the date, and some want to see it again on the day. A photo of the certificate saved to your phone saves a lot of chasing.
Does my gear need PAT testing?
Not on a yearly cycle by law. HSE says the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical equipment that could cause injury to be kept in a safe condition. They do not make yearly testing a legal requirement (HSE).
Some venues still ask to see recent PAT labels before you set up, so read the booking terms and keep any test records with your paperwork.
Laptops, music libraries and hired kit
Your laptop and controllers can usually go on the equipment section like any other item. The music on them is a different matter, as most policies do not pay to rebuild a lost library, so keep a backup away from the rig.
If you hire your speakers or lights out to other people, or rent kit in for a big gig, say so on the form. Hired-out and hired-in equipment are often priced and limited separately from your own kit.
What affects the price of cover for a DJ?
Every insurer prices its own risk, so two DJs with similar kit can get different quotes. These are the usual factors:
- the kind of gigs you play and how many each year
- the public liability limit you pick
- the replacement value of your kit and where it sleeps at night
- whether anyone helps you on a paid basis
- past claims and the excess you are happy to pay
Premiums also carry Insurance Premium Tax. HMRC has set the standard rate at 12% since 1 June 2017 (HMRC).
A wedding and party DJ with a van full of kit
As an illustration, take a mobile DJ who plays about 40 weddings and parties a year with kit worth several thousand pounds. They would usually want public liability at whatever limit their venues set, plus equipment cover that includes the van overnight.
A bar DJ who turns up with headphones and a laptop needs far less equipment cover, so their quotes could look very different.
