MOT fraud warning and how to pass first time

Motorists are being urged to refresh themselves with the rules, guidance and timing for MOTs, after new research reveals 1 in 10 are taking to the roads illegally.*

Car insurance experts from Quotezone.co.uk are sharing their guide on MOTs to help motorists in the lead up to the busiest period for vehicle tests.

The release of new registration plates in September each year normally leads to a surge in sales, creating an increase in demand for annual servicing and repairs as we enter the autumn.**

Vehicles need an MOT after they turn three years old, then every year after that. Failure to obtain a valid MOT certificate is illegal on UK roads, with motorists facing a fine of up to £1,000.

In a recent survey by Quotezone, the car insurance experts found that 15% weren’t aware they’d be fined and 12% of drivers admitted to unintentionally driving without an MOT.

A further 25% admitted they either weren’t sure, or thought they had a month or a few days grace period after their due date before any offence was committed.

The knock-on effect of this busy period is longer wait times for motorists and fewer appointment slots, leaving drivers vulnerable to missing their renewal and being caught driving without a valid MOT.

“Drivers need to book their MOT way ahead of time to ensure they avoid the risk. Rushing to get a last-minute appointment can also increase the chances of booking with a fraudulent garage. Drivers should always take their time, do their research and make sure the garage is approved before handing over the car.

“In the lead up to the appointment, make sure to always check the basics of the car. Issues with lights, tyres and wipers are quick to spot but are among the most common reasons for failure.

“MOTs can feel like a hassle, but with a little extra preparation, drivers can avoid the stress, save money on repeat tests and help keep the car safe to drive.”

1. Avoid MOT fraud

Be on the look-out for fraudulent garages who perform illegal MOTs. Some rogue garages and mechanics are taking advantage of those trying to book last-minute MOT appointments. This is why it’s important for all drivers to double-check their chosen garage is legitimate by searching reviews and selecting from approved lists of quality garages. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions, compare prices for parts and labour online and ask for a quote before any work commences that includes parts, labour and VAT.

2. Can you drive without a valid MOT?

The research showed a worrying 12% of motorists admitted to unintentionally driving without a valid MOT, and 15% weren’t aware the act could lead to fines of £1,000. In some cases, fines could reach as high as £2,500 and drivers could even face a driving ban. You can only drive a vehicle with an expired MOT if you are going to a pre-booked MOT or repair appointment. You must take the most direct route and be able to prove you are attending an appointment.

3. How to prepare your car for its MOT test

There are ways to give your car the best chance of passing its upcoming MOT test. You can carry out a series of checks, including making sure the windscreen wipers are in good condition, the car horn and all lights are in working order, all fluid levels are topped up and all mirrors are intact. The most common reasons for MOT failure are issues with lights and signals, suspension and brakes, so pay extra attention to these in the lead up to your appointment to avoid any surprises.

4. When to book your MOT

You should always book your MOT well in advance to ensure you can get a convenient appointment slot and reduce the risk of receiving a fine for driving without a valid MOT. If you book more than a month in advance of your renewal date, the new MOT will be valid for 12 months from the new test date.

5. What to do if your car fails its MOT

If your car fails its MOT, it is considered unroadworthy and should not be driven. Any major faults will need immediate repair. You can either leave your car with the test centre for repairs or get repairs done elsewhere – but remember you can only drive the vehicle when going to a pre-booked appointment.
