Convicted Motorcycle Insurance – Compare Cheap Quotes

Most motorbike riders will know that the cost of their motorbike insurance will almost certainly increase after they receive a motoring conviction. What might be less clear is just how much their premiums might increase by.

Minor motoring offences might only result in 3 penalty points, which could potentially increase a motorcyclist’s premium by around 5%.

A conviction that results in 6 or more points, on the other hand, is likely to cause a much sharper spike in the cost of convicted motorcycle insurance – possibly by as much as 25% or 30% for 6 points, and an even sharper increase in cost if you get more than 6.

Of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t shop around when you’re taking out convicted motorbike insurance. On the contrary, when your premiums are likely to rise it becomes even more important that you compare quotes from a wide range of different providers, because that way you increase your odds of finding a suitable convicted motorcycle insurance policy at a price that won’t break the bank.

Why is convicted motorcycle insurance so expensive?

Insurance providers use a wide range of different variables when they’re calculating a policyholder’s insurance premium, including their location, their age, their occupation, the type of motorbike they ride and how long they’ve held their licence.

But motoring convictions for speeding, drink driving, using a mobile while driving and a wide range of other offences will also be factored into a policyholder’s ‘risk profile’. Motorbike insurance for these convicted bike riders usually costs more because insurance claims data suggests they’re more likely to be involved in an accident and more likely to claim on their insurance.

By how much will my motorbike insurance increase after I receive a motoring conviction?

That largely depends on the offence you’ve committed and how many penalty points you received for that motoring conviction.

Minor offences might only result in 3 penalty points, which could potentially increase your premium by an average of just 5% (assuming you don’t already have points on your licence, of course).

However, many motoring convictions result in 6 penalty points, which could increase the premium for your convicted motorcycle insurance much more sharply – by 25% or 30%, on average.

Similarly, an offence that results in 11 penalty points could see your premium rise even more than that, and a motorbike rider who was banned from riding (either because of a serious offence that resulted in disqualification, or because they received an automatic TT99 disqualification through the ‘totting up’ process) can expect much higher convicted motorcycle insurance premiums when they’re allowed to ride again.

How do I find cheap convicted motorcycle insurance?

After receiving a motorbike conviction your first priority should be to shop around for the best insurance deals, because that way you stand a better chance of finding a suitable policy at a cheaper price.

Different insurance providers can have very different underwriting terms, which means some insurers might give risk factors like driving convictions a different weighting than others.

That’s one of the reasons why accepting your existing provider’s renewal quote is rarely likely to be the cheapest option – your risk profile has changed quite considerably following your motorbike conviction, so an alternative provider might be able to offer you a cheaper quote if their underwriting terms differ.

In addition to shopping around, some of the following could also help to lower your premium:

  • Keeping your motorbike locked in a secure garage when not in use.
  • Choosing a lower-performance motorbike in order to qualify for a lower premium.
  • Avoiding motorcycle modifications.
  • Completing an advanced rider training course with an organisation such as the Institute of Advanced Motorists or the British Motorcylists’ Federation.
