Europe’s best value Christmas city break 2026
05/11/2026
Europe’s best value Christmas city break for 2026 has been revealed, with Budapest taking the top spot.
Travel insurance experts at Quotezone have created the 2026 Best Value Christmas City Break Index to help travellers discover the best destinations for enjoying Europe’s famous Christmas markets without spending a fortune.
The index looked at ten popular festive destinations across Europe, ranking them based on factors including average hotel prices for a three-day stay during the busy season, the cost of eating out, draught beer prices and public transport costs.
The experts also looked at how long the main Christmas market runs in each destination, as markets that operate for longer give visitors more opportunities to plan a trip around suitable dates, potentially making it easier to find cheaper flights and accommodation.
Hungarian capital Budapest was named the best value Christmas city break in Europe for 2026. With an average hotel price of £370 for three days in the busy season, meals costing just over £10 per person and draught beer priced at around £2.60, the city offers visitors an affordable festive getaway.
Its Advent Bazilika Christmas Market, which has also been named as Europe’s most beautiful Christmas Market,* runs for 50 days, giving tourists plenty of time to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
Kraków in Poland takes second place. It has the cheapest three-day hotel prices in the index, averaging just £340, while meals cost an average of £8.70 per person at a budget-friendly restaurant and a single public transport ticket is just over £1.
Kraków Christmas Market runs for 41 days and it has also been previously named as the most festive in Europe.
Prague in the Czech Republic ranks third. The city offers the cheapest meals in the index at just £8.50 and the lowest draught beer prices at around £2.40.
With a three-day hotel stay averaging £401 and its main Christmas market running for 40 days, Prague offers another attractive option for a festive city break.
Vienna takes fourth place, followed by Strasbourg in fifth and Nuremberg in sixth. While all three are famous for their traditional Christmas markets, higher accommodation and food and drink prices affected their overall rankings.
Brussels ranks seventh, while Edinburgh takes eighth place, the UK’s only entry. Despite its main Christmas market running for 51 days, Edinburgh has the second-highest hotel prices in the ranking, with a three-day stay averaging £930 in the busy season. Visitors can also expect to pay £18 for a meal for one at an inexpensive restaurant and £6 for a draught beer.
Copenhagen finishes ninth, despite having the longest-running main Christmas market in the index at 52 days. However, its average three-day hotel price of £988 and draught beer costing over £7 make it one of the more expensive destinations for a festive getaway.
Basel rounds off the top ten. The city has the highest meal prices in the ranking at £22.70 per person, alongside relatively expensive accommodation at £693 for three days and a single public transport ticket costing around £4.
While Christmas markets offer a magical experience, it’s also important to be careful. Busy crowds can create opportunities for pickpockets, especially since revelers have their money to hand so they can sample a variety of stalls and attractions.
For example, Prague’s Old Town Square which hosts the city’s main Christmas market, has recently been named as the third most pickpocketed landmark in Europe.
Travellers are encouraged to stay vigilant in crowded areas, keep their valuables secure and ensure they have the right travel insurance in place before setting off on their festive getaway.
Helen Rolph, travel insurance expert at Quotezone.co.uk said: “Europe is home to some of the world’s most magical Christmas experiences, and a winter city break is a great way to get into the festive spirit. However, the cost of accommodation, food, drinks and getting around can vary significantly between destinations.
“We’ve created the 2026 Best Value Christmas City Break Index to help travellers compare some of Europe’s most popular festive destinations and find the best value for their money.
“Budapest came out on top, offering an excellent combination of affordable accommodation, reasonably priced food and drink, and festive atmosphere with a beautiful Christmas market that runs for 50 days.
“Kraków and Prague also performed exceptionally well, with some of the cheapest food and drink prices in the ranking, alongside affordable hotel stays. Both are fantastic options for travellers looking to enjoy the festive sights and take in a traditional European Christmas market without spending too much.
“Interestingly, some of Europe’s most famous Christmas destinations, such as Edinburgh and Copenhagen, ranked lower due to their higher accommodation and everyday costs, despite having some of the longest-running festive markets in the index.
“When planning a Christmas city break, it’s worth looking beyond the cost of flights and hotels and considering everyday expenses such as meals, drinks and public transport, as these can quickly add up.
“We’d also encourage travellers to take out travel insurance before heading abroad. Winter weather can cause flight delays and cancellations, while busy city centers and Christmas markets can be hotspots for pickpocketing. Having the right cover in place can help give travellers peace of mind during their festive getaway.”
