Who is Helen Rolph?

Helen Rolph is an Insurance Expert at Quotezone with over 15 years of UK insurance comparison experience. She specialises in home and contents insurance, energy comparisons, pet insurance and travel insurance, and also works across Quotezone’s motoring panel including car, van, motorbike, breakdown and temporary car insurance. Helen helps customers find competitive cover and bring down their household bills. Helen holds a BSc (Hons) in Management and Information Systems from Queen’s University Belfast.

Day-to-day Helen works directly with home insurers, pet underwriters, travel insurers and energy suppliers across the UK, building the panels that power Quotezone’s household comparison products. That includes navigating the differences between buildings rebuild cost and market value, pre-existing condition rules on pet policies, medical declarations on travel insurance, and the trade-offs between fixed and variable energy tariffs. The goal is straightforward: help customers cut their household outgoings without sacrificing the cover they need.

As part of her role, Helen undertakes regular professional development and compliance training through accredited learning programmes delivered by Skillcast, covering key regulatory and industry topics including Consumer Duty, the FCA’s Senior Managers & Certification Regime (SM&CR), Conduct Risk, Financial Crime prevention, Data Protection, customer vulnerability, conflicts of interest and Treating Customers Fairly. This ensures the comparison products Helen oversees keep pace with evolving FCA requirements and industry best practice.

Helen’s expert insights

On rebuild cost vs market value

“One of the most common reasons people overpay for buildings cover is insuring their home at market value rather than rebuild cost. Rebuild cost is usually significantly lower than what the property would sell for, especially in popular areas. The ABI publishes a regular rebuild cost guide that’s worth checking before every renewal.”

On taking out pet cover early

“The single biggest mistake pet owners make is waiting until something goes wrong to take out insurance. Once a condition has been diagnosed or treated, it’s permanently excluded as a pre-existing condition. Lifetime cover taken out when a pet is young and healthy almost always works out cheaper in the long run than accident-only cover that excludes the costly chronic conditions.”

On fixed vs variable energy tariffs

“When wholesale energy prices are low or expected to rise, locking in a fixed tariff usually saves money over the year. When prices are high or expected to fall, a variable tariff often works out cheaper. Most households default to a standard variable tariff and overpay for years without realising it. A quick comparison every six to twelve months is one of the easiest ways to cut a household bill.”

On annual vs single-trip travel cover

“If you take more than one holiday a year, annual multi-trip cover is almost always cheaper than buying single-trip policies for each. The break-even point is usually two trips. Just make sure the destination and duration limits on the annual policy match how you actually travel, and that any pre-existing medical conditions are fully declared, otherwise the cover can be voided at claim time.”
