Young motorists paying less for monthly premiums – But it’s costing them
11/06/2026
Young drivers across the UK are paying over a third less for their monthly insurance premiums but are still being penalised for being unable to afford a one-off annual payment.
That’s according to the latest data from car insurance experts at Quotezone.co.uk who analysed the cost difference between monthly and annual premiums over the last two years.
This comes after an FCA review* investigated premium finance to ensure firms were offering fair value.
Since the review, premium finance charges have been in decline, saving motorists £157 million on monthly premiums for motor insurance.*
In line with the review, Quotezone data reflects the average fall in prices – with the cost difference of paying monthly versus annually dropping from 12% in 2024, down to 10% in 2025 and is currently around 9.6%.
The positive impact has been most felt by teenage motorists and those in their early 20s who pay the highest insurance costs. In 2024 they were paying a monthly total premium of around £2,152 across the year, which dropped to £1,363 this year. That’s a 36.6% decrease in insurance premiums in just two years.
| Period | Annual total premium cost | Monthly total premium cost | Difference £ | Difference % |
| Q1 2024 | 1908.55 | 2152.54 | 241.76 | 12.41 |
| Q1 2025 | 1369.05 | 1512.82 | 143.36 | 10.41 |
| Q1 2026 | 1238.3 | 1363.16 | 111.61 | 9.64 |
Whilst this goes some way to redressing the balance, many motorists are still unaware just how much more they are paying by choosing to pay monthly.
Survey data from Quotezone has revealed over half, 51%, don’t know how much more they’re expected to pay, with only 35% correctly identifying an average 9-12% increase in price for choosing to pay monthly.
53% of motorists feel it’s not fair that people who can’t afford to pay annually are being charged more.
The data analysis by Quotezone allows customers to see how much they could save by switching to an annual payment rather than monthly and the cost differences based on age, use and where they live.
The insurance experts also suggest reviewing all details on insurance forms carefully as some unexpected factors can affect pricing, including marital status and the number of children.
Greg Wilson, CEO and car insurance expert at Quotezone said: “It’s important insurers are completely transparent about how much customers are paying, whether that’s for annual or monthly payments.
“It’s good news that prices for spreading out that cost are coming down, and for some age groups, particularly those in the 17 – 24 years age bracket, the cost difference is significant. In the last two years alone, young motorists are paying on average £130 a year less. That’s a big saving for such a cash-strapped age group.
“It’s crucial for both insurers and price comparison sites to have a clear, simple process and explain terms succinctly – so drivers, regardless of age or motoring experience, understand exactly what is being asked and why. At Quotezone, we want our customers to get the best value they can, and where they can make savings, we encourage them to do just that.
“There are always savings to be had when taking out car insurance, and sometimes it’s the basics that offer the most potential, such as always double checking the form before submitting. Errors on seemingly minor things like marital status and job title could lead to missed savings.
“Another option is to look for credit cards with 0% APR for 12 months, giving drivers the option to avail of the benefits of paying annually yet work out a monthly payment plan with the credit card company – however drivers need to make sure they read all the terms and conditions and be sure they can keep up the repayments and have them completed in a certain timeframe, as additional costs tend to be added outside of the initial period.”
Quotezone helps over 4 million customers every year compare and find savings on all sorts of motoring products such as van, truck and car insurance.
