Broadband in Scotland is a story of two halves. Scotland’s cities – Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen – are well served, with Openreach full fibre, Virgin Media cable and large alternative-network builds. Rural Scotland, from the Highlands to the islands, has further to go, which is why the Scottish Government’s R100 programme is rolling fibre out to harder-to-reach homes. Quotezone compares broadband deals from 15+ UK providers – enter your postcode to see exactly what can be installed at your address.

Which providers can you compare in Scotland?

Which providers reach your home depends on where you live. Most of Scotland can compare the big national names, with extra cable and full-fibre choice in the cities.

National providers

BT, Sky, Vodafone, NOW, EE and Plusnet all sell broadband across Scotland over the Openreach network – full fibre where it’s built, standard fibre where it isn’t yet.

Virgin Media cable

Virgin Media runs its own cable network in many Scottish towns and cities, with gigabit download speeds available across large parts of Glasgow, Edinburgh and beyond.

Full-fibre networks

CityFibre has built full-fibre networks in cities including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, carrying providers such as Vodafone, TalkTalk and Zen. Other altnets reach some Scottish addresses too.

Full fibre in Scotland: cities versus rural

The split between town and country is the real Scottish broadband story – well-connected cities alongside rural areas still waiting for the fastest lines.

Cities are well served

Scotland’s cities have strong full-fibre and cable coverage. See our Glasgow broadband and Edinburgh broadband pages for what’s on offer locally.

Rural areas lag behind

Across rural Scotland – the Highlands, the islands and remote glens – full fibre has been slower to arrive, so a postcode check matters even more. Where it hasn’t reached, mobile broadband over 4G or 5G can fill the gap.

Closing the gap

At 71%, Scotland has the lowest full-fibre coverage of the four UK nations, but it’s rising fast – up nine percentage points in a year (Ofcom Nations Report 2025).

How fast is broadband in Scotland?

Speeds in Scotland range from everyday fibre to full gigabit – what you can get depends entirely on which networks have reached your street.

Gigabit in the cities

Where full fibre or Virgin Media cable has been built, gigabit-capable broadband (1Gbps and beyond) is widely available across Scotland’s urban areas.

Standard fibre elsewhere

In towns and rural areas without full fibre yet, standard fibre still supports comfortable browsing, streaming and video calls for most households.

The speed you actually get

Providers quote the speed you’re likely to get at peak times (8pm–10pm); if you consistently don’t get it, you can leave your contract (Ofcom).

Rural Scotland and the R100 programme

If you live in rural Scotland, public investment is steadily improving coverage – but availability still varies a lot from one address to the next.

What R100 is

R100 (Reaching 100%) is a Scottish Government programme, delivered with Openreach, extending full-fibre broadband to harder-to-reach homes and businesses across rural Scotland.

Highlands and islands

It targets some of the country’s most remote communities, from the Highlands to the islands, where commercial networks have not reached on their own.

Other options meanwhile

Where fixed lines are still limited, the Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme can help, and 4G or 5G mobile broadband is often a practical alternative.

How to switch broadband in Scotland

Switching is simpler than it used to be – you don’t need to contact your current provider to start the move.

Compare at your postcode

Enter your Scottish postcode on Quotezone, compare the deals available at your address and pick the package that suits you.

Buy on the provider’s site

Completing your purchase starts the move under Ofcom’s One Touch Switching rules, in place since 12 September 2024 – your new provider arranges the switch and closes your old service (Ofcom).

Get connected

A new full-fibre line may need a short engineer visit to fit a small box on your wall; cable and standard-fibre switches are often quicker.

Where Scotland sits in the UK broadband picture

Full fibre reaches 71% of homes in Scotland – the lowest of the four UK nations, behind Northern Ireland on 95%, England on 79% and Wales on 78% – but it is growing quickly, up nine percentage points (around 250,000 extra premises) in a year (Ofcom Nations Report 2025). Across the UK as a whole, full fibre now reaches 82% of homes and gigabit-capable broadband 89% (Ofcom Connected Nations).

The gap is mostly about geography. Scotland’s cities are densely built and commercially attractive, so Openreach, Virgin Media and altnets such as CityFibre have invested heavily there. Reaching scattered rural homes costs far more, which is why the Scottish Government’s R100 programme, delivered with Openreach, is funding fibre into the Highlands, islands and other remote areas. For most Scottish homes that makes it worth checking what’s available with Quotezone before your current deal ends – coverage really does change street by street.

Scotland broadband FAQs

Which broadband providers are available in Scotland?

Most major providers serve Scotland. BT, Sky, Vodafone, NOW, EE and Plusnet sell broadband over the Openreach network, Virgin Media runs its own cable network in many towns and cities, and full-fibre networks such as CityFibre reach Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and other areas. Enter your postcode to see who can connect your home.

Is full fibre available across Scotland?

Full fibre reaches about 71% of Scottish homes – the lowest of the four UK nations, though rising fast (Ofcom Nations Report 2025). Cities are well covered, while rural Scotland has further to go. A postcode check is the only reliable way to confirm full fibre at your address.

Why does rural Scotland have slower broadband?

Reaching scattered rural and island homes costs far more than wiring up dense cities, so commercial networks built there first. The Scottish Government’s R100 programme, delivered with Openreach, is funding full fibre into the Highlands, islands and other remote areas to close that gap.

What is R100 in Scotland?

R100 (Reaching 100%) is a Scottish Government programme, delivered with Openreach, aiming to extend faster broadband to homes and businesses across Scotland, with a focus on rural and island communities that commercial rollout has not reached. The Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme supports it.

Can I get Virgin Media broadband in Scotland?

Virgin Media’s cable network covers much of urban Scotland, including large parts of Glasgow and Edinburgh, often with gigabit speeds. It isn’t everywhere, though – enter your postcode on Quotezone to see whether Virgin Media and which other providers can connect your home.

What is the fastest broadband in Scotland?

In areas with full fibre or Virgin Media cable, gigabit broadband (1Gbps and beyond) is available, mainly in the cities. The exact top speed depends on which networks have reached your street, so check your postcode to see the fastest package you can actually get.

How do I switch broadband in Scotland?

Completing your purchase starts the move under One Touch Switching, so your new provider arranges the switch and closes your old service. A new full-fibre line may need a short engineer visit.

What can I do if full fibre hasn’t reached my area in Scotland?

Where full fibre hasn’t arrived, you can often still get standard fibre, and cable in many urban areas. In remote spots with little fixed coverage, 4G or 5G mobile broadband can be an alternative, and R100 funding may reach you in time. Your postcode check shows what’s possible today.
