Sidecar Insurance

Riding shotgun with loved ones and friends on your motorbike can be a lot of fun, but some pillion riders prefer to have a more comfortable seat on days out. If you have or are thinking of installing a sidecar to your motorbike, it can come in.

The rules of attaching a sidecar

Since sidecars are technically attachments for your bike so there are some rules you’ll need to follow when installing one on the side of your motorcycle.

  • If your motorbike was registered after the 1st of September 1981, you’ll need to fit the sidecar to your bikes left side. The only exemption being that your sidecar was fitted outside the UK.
  • If you’ve installed a sidecar recently then you’ll need to get an MOT, even if you have a recent MOT for a solo bike
  • Sidecars must be fitted to the left of your bike unless your vehicle was registered before 1 September 1981, or outside of the UK.
  • After you’ve fitted your sidecar, you’ll need to give your motorbike an MOT – even if a recent MOT still covers the your solo bike.
  • You’ll need to take and pass a compulsory basic training (CBT) before riding with a sidecar.

What is sidecar insurance

A sidecar is considered an attachment to your motorbike and your standard motorcycle insurance policy will typically cover a sidecar unless specifically stated otherwise. Modified bikes are typically more expensive to insure however and not all insurers will offer cover for them although more and more insurers are starting to offer this coverage. You will need to declare all details for your motorbike to the insurer such as the make, model, condition and of course whether there are any modifications such as a sidecar.

Getting cheap sidecar insurance

Whilst modified motorbikes a typically more expensive There are a few things riders looking for a deal on their sidecar insurance can do.

  • Be honest and upfront with your insurer about your sidecar.
  • Get multiple quotes from different insurers to compare prices and coverage.
  • Ask about any discounts that may be available, such as discounts for members of motorcycle clubs or associations.

It is important to remember that the cost of sidecar insurance can vary widely depending on factors like your location, age, type of bike, and the insurance company itself. By following these steps and also taking the time to shop around and compare multiple quotes, you can increase your chances of finding affordable sidecar insurance that meets your needs.
