How Much Is Rabbit Insurance UK

26/05/2023

With over 1 million rabbits owned as pets in the UK according to latest estimates, these floppy eared companions have never been more popular. So how much does it cost to insure your rabbit?

The cost of rabbit insurance in the UK

In short the cost you can expect to pay on your rabbit insurance will vary between owners. As with other types of pet insurance the exact amount will fluctuate across the type of coverage you choose along with the age, sometimes the breed and also the condition of your rabbit. Generally speaking, an older rabbit will cost more to insure as it ages with annual premiums typically increasing around £20 every two years. Typically when a rabbit turns five years old it will be deemed too old to insure. This means you’ll need to start your coverage for your rabbit when it is younger and typically the younger you start your coverage the better. You should compare multiple quotes from differing lenders in order to find the best deal for you. Average prices can be misleading as they may not provide you with a figure which is accurate to what you can expect to pay.

Here are the types of coverage to consider when deciding on a pet insurance policy for your rabbit.

Accident-only – This policy will only cover your rabbit for any accident-related costs that it might end up getting itself into. It will provide you cover for any initial treatment costs and will also cover you for any complications that your rabbit may suffer in the immediate aftermath. This will also include the costs of MRI scans, and any surgeries your rabbit may require. For example, if your rabbit is hit by a car or has a nasty cut or fall, your accident-only pet insurance will be able to cover you for the associated veterinary bills, it will not however cover you for any ongoing treatment.

Lifetime insurance – The main advantage of lifetime pet insurance is that this type of cover usually imposes fewer exclusions than an annual policy, which can be a hugely important consideration when you have an older rabbit that is at greater risk of developing a chronic medical condition. The best way to think about a lifetime insurance policy for your rabbit is one that can cover you for the duration of your rabbit’s life with less exclusions than other policy types. It is important to note however that your premiums are still likely to creep up as your rabbit ages.

Pre-Existing Medical Conditions Pet Insurance – Whilst it is certainly more difficult to get a policy that will cover a rabbit with pre-existing medical issues, it isn’t impossible. Our specialist providers can offer you policies that will cover your rabbit even if it has certain medical conditions. What conditions are and aren’t covered can vary across insurers so be sure to compare multiple quotes.
