Types of car insurance for a Volvo

When you’re comparing Volvo cars insurance you’ll notice that you’ll be given three coverage levels to choose from: comprehensive, third party only, or third party, fire and theft.

Comprehensive car insurance for a Volvo

As you might expect from the name, comprehensive coverage will offer you the most comprehensive protection for your Volvo. These days most drivers opt for this level of coverage, particularly since less comprehensive insurance policies sometimes aren’t any cheaper anymore.

Third party only Volvo insurance

This is the minimum level of insurance required by law, and it’s only designed to protect other road users – that’s why it’s called ‘third party only’ cover.

In the past, this type of policy was sometimes quite a bit cheaper than more comprehensive insurance options. That isn’t always the case anymore though, so if you’re trying to find cheap Volvo insurance don’t assume this will be your cheapest option without checking quotes first.

Third party, fire and theft car insurance

This protects other road users (third parties), just like a third-party-only policy would. But this insurance will also protect you if your Volvo is stolen or damaged in a fire.

It’s still not as comprehensive as a fully comprehensive Volvo insurance policy though. For example, if you’re involved in an accident and you are at fault then third party, fire and theft won’t cover the cost of repairing or replacing your Volvo.

Volvo driveaway insurance

Volvo driveaway insurance is another type of Volvo insurance that differs from other coverage levels because it’s only designed to protect you for a short amount of time.

In fact, as you might have guessed from the name, Volvo driveaway insurance is a temporary insurance policy that’s only meant to insure you to drive your new Volvo home from the dealership. After that, you’ll need to take out a new Volvo car insurance policy for your new set of wheels.

How can I get cheap Volvo insurance quotes?

You might think you’re at the mercy of car insurance companies when you need Volvo car insurance UK quotes, but that’s not entirely true.   These companies assess your ‘riskiness’ in order to calculate their quotes. And there are things you can do to make yourself (and your car) less risky in the eyes of the insurer.

Reduce your annual mileage

The more miles you drive, the higher your odds of being involved in an accident on the road. So if you’re able to reduce your annual mileage you’ll reduce your risk of an insurance claim. That means your quotes might be a bit cheaper.

Improve the security of your car

Many newer Volvos have security features like car alarms and engine immobilisers already installed. But if your Volvo doesn’t then you could reduce your premium by improving the security of your car.

Avoid car modifications

Modified cars are seen as riskier, especially if the modifications make the engine more powerful or faster.

It’s best to avoid all modifications to the car if you’re trying to keep your insurance quotes low.

Pay your premium annually

A lot of insurance companies will give you the option to pay annually or monthly. If you can, it’s best to choose the annual option, because that’s usually cheaper than paying it off monthly.

Increase the excess on your policy

This is only a good idea if you’re confident you’ll be able to cover the cost of your excess if you do need to claim. So don’t choose a very high excess that would be totally unaffordable.

If you can afford a higher excess though, that will sometimes bring your quotes down a little.

Choose appropriate coverage

You’ll usually be offered lots of different add-ons when you’re taking out Volvo car insurance. But all those optional extras can push your quotes way up if you add a lot of them to your policy.

Only choose the addons you need in order to keep your quotes down.

Shop around and compare Volvo insurance quotes

Shopping around by comparing Volvo insurance quotes from a wide range of different insurance companies is one of the best ways to find cheaper quotes.

How much does it cost to insure a Volvo?

Volvos tend to be on the cheaper side when it comes to maintenance and insurance. But the price you’ll pay to insure a Volvo will depend on a lot of different factors.  Your age, your location, your driving record, and your insurance claims history will all be taken into account. Even your occupation can affect your insurance costs.  The type of Volvo you own will also affect your premium since some Volvo models are in higher insurance groups than others.

Volvo car insurance groups

Every car in the UK is categorised into one of 50 different car insurance groups. Cars in insurance group 1 are generally the cheapest to insure, while those in insurance group 50 are some of the most expensive. Car insurance groups change over time. However current Volvo models fall between insurance group 15 and insurance group 45.

Volvo C30 insurance group

Your Volvo C30 insurance group will vary depending on the version of the C30 you own. Insurance groups for this particular model range from insurance group 16 (for the Volvo C30 1.6 ES 3d) to the considerably more expensive insurance group 34 (for the Volvo C30 Coupe T5 R-Design Lux 3d).

Volvo V50 insurance group

Insurance groups for this model are equally broad, ranging from car insurance group 16 for the Volvo V50 1.6 ES 5d, to insurance group 34 for the Volvo V50 T5 R-Design SE Sport 5d.

Volvo V40 insurance group

A lot of Volvo V40 models fall into insurance groups 17 or 18. But there are a number of V40s with more powerful engines that are categorised into insurance groups 30 or higher.

The T5 R-Design Lux Nav 5d Geartronic has the highest insurance group of any Volvo V40, as it’s categorised as a group 34 car.

Volvo XC60 insurance group

Volvo XC60s have more powerful engines, which is why they range from insurance group 25 all the way up to group 44.

Volvo XC90 insurance group

The Volvo XC90 is an SUV with a relatively powerful engine, which means these models all tend to fall into higher insurance groups.

Depending on the particular version of the XC90 you own, your insurance group could range from insurance group 35 to a more expensive group 45 model.
