Classic motorcycle insurance

Protect your prized possessions with classic bike insurance for all ages

If you’re the proud owner of a vintage vehicle, it’s likely that you want to ensure it’s kept in the best possible condition. One of the easiest ways to do this is to invest in classic bike insurance.

Whether keeping it for show or getting out onto the roads, classic motorbike insurance can give you extra peace of mind.

How old does a motorbike have to be to be classed as classic?

The definition of a classic motorbike varies from insurer to insurer. While some believe bikes over 15 years of age are classic, others say it’s 20, 30 or even 40.

What is classic bike insurance?

Classic motorbike insurance protects you and your vintage bike, whatever it’s used for. It can also protect other people, their bikes and property.

Do I need classic bike insurance?

Every vehicle or bike that is going to be driven on the road needs at least third party cover. Comprehensive or third party, fire and theft will provide you with a better level of protection but which one you take out is entirely up to you.

Is there a difference between classic bike insurance and standard motorbike cover?

Yes, typically classic bikes are stored away and only ridden occasionally. This means that the risk of an accident is lower. They are valued differently which can impact the quote too. Some insurers also require drivers of a classic motorbike to be over the age of 25.

What is covered by classic bike insurance?

Similar to standard motorbike insurance, there are three levels to choose from: third party, comprehensive and third party, fire and theft. The first level of cover is third party which protects other people, their bikes and property. Third party, fire and theft adds to this and covers your bike if it’s stolen or damaged in a fire. Fully comprehensive is the highest level of insurance and covers all of this and any damage to your bike if you’re involved in an accident.

Does classic motorbike insurance include any additional features?

It’s important to check your individual policy to see what is included but usually you will need to invest in additional cover if you want it. This includes cover for accessories, breakdown, driving abroad, driving multiple bikes, personal accident or misfuelling.

What information is needed for a classic bike insurance quote?

Your insurance provider will need to know specific information about you and your bike. This includes its make and model, its value, when it was bought, any security measures on the bike, and your driving history.

Are classic bikes more expensive than standard bikes to insure?

Usually, classic motorbikes are cheaper to insure compared to standard motorbikes. This is because classic bike owners are more careful with their bikes and maintain them to a high standard. Classic bikes are also rarely used everyday which reduces the risk of an accident.
