Kia Motors Corp is an automobile manufacturer in South Korean, which began operations in 1944, producing Mazda models under license from Mazda, including the Pride and Avella models. These cars were sold in North America as the Ford Festiva and also the Ford Aspire. The slogan of the Company is “The power to surprise”. Kia Motors Corp is South Koreas oldest car company and the name of the company roughly translates to ‘arising from Asia’. Even though the company is relatively young compared to many car and van companies, Kia is South Korea’s oldest car company.
In 1993, KIA began selling cars in California. Californian dealers sold the Sephia, and then a few years later they added the Sportage. Ten-year power train warranties have been aggressively advertised by the company in an effort to obtain higher sales and penetrate the market. The company has been trying to recover from the image of poor quality and workmanship with better warranties on their cars. KIA was purchased in 1998 by the Hyundai Motor Company, which is the worlds seventh largest auto company.
This association with the Hyundai Motor Co. helped the Kia Motors Corp increased sales dramatically and enabled the company to expand in a number of markets. Kia Motors Corp produces a number of SUVs and vans including the Sportage, the Bongo, the Besta, the Wide Bongo, the Power Bongo, the Topic, The Towner, the Rocsta and the Ceres.
Kia Motors Corp also produces a number of commercial vehicles which include the following: the Kia KB based on the Hino Truck, the Rhino, the Kia Trade, the Kia Boxer, the Kia AM Truck, the Kia AM Bus, the Kia Granbird, the Kia Titan, the Kia Super Titan, the Kia Jumbo Titan, the Kia Granto, the Kia Combi and the Kia Cosmos.
Kia Motors Corp has four subsidiaries – Kia Motors Europe, Doongpung Ywieda Kia, Kia Motors America, and Asia Motors Ltd.
Initially as Kia Motors Corp began exporting cars and vans to other parts of the world however, they consistently had to reliability problems with their cars and other vehicles that they were providing to various countries. They were ranked last on many automobile ranking systems due to mechanical problems they were having with their vehicles as well as durability of the overall vehicle. Kia Motors Corp has worked hard to improve the situation and as of 2004 and 2005 they have significantly improved the reliability of their vehicles. Kia Motors Corp no longer ranks last on JD Powers durability index. Kia Motors Corp with its reliability problems, even helped push South Korea into a financial crisis during 1997 and 1998. The purchase of Kia Motors Corp by Hyundai Motor Company in 1998 had a significant impact on the sales of Kia Motors Corp automobiles and the company has now considering expansion in a variety of countries.
