Freezer Insurance

Insurance for your fridge freezer

A decent freezer could set you back up to a thousand pounds, and some of the most high-spec freezers from brands like Miele and Polar can cost as much as £2,000 or £3,000. Replacing that appliance could prove painful if it ever bites the dust… unless you have suitable freezer insurance in place, of course.

Quotezone can help you quickly compare home appliance insurance and help you start saving on your insurance coverage today. Whether you need to insure a Fridge freezer, dishwasher, or washing machine, Quotezone has you covered.

Is freezer insurance worth the money?

There are likely to be two main considerations when you’re weighing up whether or not freezer insurance is worth the money:

  1. Did you pay a decent amount of money for your freezer?
  1. Is your freezer still under warranty?

If you opted for a fairly budget-friendly freezer from Currys or Amazon that only set you back £100 to £150 then you might decide it’s not worth the hassle. After all, if that freezer gives up the ghost you’ll be able to replace it with a similar model without breaking the bank.

By contrast, if you paid £2,000 or £3,000 for a high-end Miele or Polar freezer it’s likely you won’t have that sort of money lying around if the machine breaks and needs to be replaced. In that case, it might be a good idea to invest in a suitable freezer insurance policy, which could help you shoulder some (or all) of that cost.

The second consideration is the manufacturer’s warranty.

If your freezer is relatively new it may well still be under warranty, in which case mechanical faults can be dealt with by the manufacturer without the need for a separate insurance policy.

Every new freezer sold in the UK must come with at least a 12-month warranty, although some manufacturers offer a longer warranty as standard.

Miele, Polar, LG and AEG freezers all come with a 24-month warranty as standard, for instance.

How much does it cost to insure a freezer?

That will depend on the make and model you’re insuring, its age, its value, your claims history and your no-claims bonus, so it would be best to compare freezer insurance quotes in order to get an accurate idea of costs.

Do chest freezers cost more to insure than upright freezers?

No – in fact the opposite may be the case.

One of the factors insurance providers will take into account is the value of your freezer, and upright freezers generally cost more on average than chest freezers, which means upright models may sometimes cost slightly more to insure.

What is covered by fridge freezer insurance?

Typically, you can expect to be covered for the following by most insurers when you take out insurance for your freezer.

  • Mechanical breakdown
  • Electrical breakdown
  • Typical claim limit of £500 however this can be increased with some policies

Can I insure a freezer that has “smart home” features built-in?

Yes, if your freezer includes sensors or tracking components that make it a smart home appliance you should still be able to insure that freezer. These appliances do sometimes cost more to buy, which means they might also cost a little more to insure.

Does freezer insurance cover damage that occurs during transportation?

No, probably not.

If the freezer is damaged when it is being delivered to you then it will usually be the retailer that will be liable for that damage, or if the damage is caused by a removal company when you’re moving home then that removal company will likely be liable.

Can I insure a freezer that is kept outside, on my patio or porch for instance?

It’s likely that keeping your freezer plugged in outside would invalidate any freezer insurance policy you took out for it because the exposure to the elements that the appliance would experience would increase the risk of an insurance claim occurring and undermine your commitment to ensuring you take “due care and attention” with the appliance.

What about a freezer that’s plugged in inside my garage, can I insure that?

Yes, provided your garage is fully enclosed, with a full roof and locking doors, then you should be able to insure a freezer that is plugged in there.

If my freezer breaks and I have to claim on my insurance can I also claim for the food that has spoiled?

No, while home insurance will often cover the cost of lost food in the event of an insurance claim, a freezer insurance policy is only designed to help with the financial burden of repairing or replacing that one appliance. As such, any food that is wasted due to a freezer fault generally won’t be covered.

What about damage to my flooring or walls, will that be covered?

No, as with food that spoils due to a faulty freezer, any damage that your kitchen or garage might sustain because of a leaking freezer generally won’t be covered by your freezer insurance since that specific policy is only designed to help with the cost of repairing or replacing that appliance.

You might be able to claim on your home insurance or home emergency cover if your freezer damages your floor or walls though, assuming you have those additional policies.

If I move house what happens to my freezer insurance?

The policy can move with you, but you will have a contractual obligation to inform your insurer of your change of address, and they may charge a small admin fee to update their records.

If I fail to inform my insurer of my change of address can I still claim on this insurance policy?

Probably not.

Failure to inform your insurer of your change of address may well invalidate your insurance policy, which means any insurance claims could be refused if your freezer breaks at your new address but the policy is still registered at your old one.

Does freezer insurance auto-renew?

Possibly, but it will depend on your insurance provider.

Some providers will renew this insurance automatically in order to ensure your appliance is always covered, while others may require you to renew your policy each year.

If you no longer need this insurance it’s worth double checking with your insurance provider to make sure it isn’t going to auto-renew, and cancelling that auto-renewal if it is currently set to renew at the end of the year.

If you are looking for cheaper premiums on your home appliances, Quotezone can help you with that. Our panel of UK-based insurance specialists are able to connect you with providers who will be able to get you the right cover at the right price.
