The Lincoln Motor Company was founded in 1917 by Henry M. Leland. Leland, who was one of the founders of Cadillac, left General Motors during World War I and formed the Lincoln Motor Company to build Liberty aircraft engines for the war effort. Once the war was over the factories were redesigned to manufacture luxury automobiles.
