Vauxhall Motors is currently a UK subsidiary of General Motors. The name Vauxhall came from the thirteenth century from a house named the Vauxhall. The company, Vauxhall began in London in 1837 to build pumps and marine engines. The first car was built in 1903.

Vauxhall was purchased by GM in 1925 and built cars up until the war at which time the Vauxhall company built Churchill tanks. Vauxhall returned to building mass production cars after the war, building notable cars such as the the Viva, the Chevette, Cavalier and Carlton were basically restyled versions of the Kadett, Ascona and Rekord, and the Firenza. The Vauxhall brand was gradually dropped by GM in favour of Opel beginning in 1982.
