Dacia began operations in 1968 when the first factory was built. The company built a sedan, a wagon version of the original Renault 12, and there was also a pickup version and later on hatchback. Dacia is a Romanian carmaker belonging to the Renault group of companies. Dacia will also be known for popular models that were built such as the Dacia 1300, the 1310, 1400 and the 1410. Dacia purchased the basic design and tooling from its owner Renault, however they failed to make major design changes to the car and overtime the car design became outdated.
During communist times the plants were the Dacia was manufactured, there were two assembly lines. One line manufactured cars and vans for sale in Romania. The other line produced the same cars and the same vans for expert. This line used superior parts and there was greater care taken during assembly of these cars for export. Many Romanians who live near the Hungarian border would purchase their Dacia in Hungary and bring it back across the border.
The Dacia was sold in the UK however British consumers were not overly satisfied with this Romanian car and increasingly opted for more reliable Japanese and South Korean and Malaysian cars and vans. Dacia was purchased by the Renault group of companies with the intention of using the manufacturing plant in Romania as the main automobile hub for development in both central Europe and Eastern Europe. During 2002 the Company sold 53,000 vehicles and held 50% of the market share in Romania.
New models were introduced beginning in 1995 called the Dacia Nova. In 2003 the Dacia supernova was introduced with a new engine and gearbox as well as air-conditioning option. The Dacia Solenza had power steering and driver airbag options however the Solenza will no longer be produced starting in 2005. Although the factory no longer produces cars or vans, they continue to manufactured utility versions of the 1300 series such as pickups, drop side, double cab with gasoline or diesel engines.
Dacia produced a one time pickup from 1984 until 1991, and another pickup called the duster 4x4 which was produced from 1990 until 1991. They also added the duster 4x4 hardtop, which was produced from 1984 until 1993. The Dacia Logan continues to be manufactured today after being launched in 2004.
