The Austin Motor Company was founded by Herbert Austin in 1905 and began producing cars directed at the mass market in the 1920s. The Austin has been built under license by BMW and engine designs were copied by Nissan out of Japan at one point. Austin merged with another company in 1952 to become part of the British Motor Corporation, which later became British Leyland.
The last Austin car was built in 1987 and the rights are owned by MG Rover which is struggling with financial issues. The Longbridge plant collapsed in April 2005 which was the last MG rover plant. The Austin Motor car was an exciting car and many can still be seen on British roads today.
