Impounded Bike Insurance

Compare Impounded Bike Insurance

Over 200,000 vehicles are seized and impounded by UK police forces each year, but when those drivers want to reclaim their impounded vehicles they could be turned away unless they have the right type of insurance in place.

The most common reason for a bike to be impounded by authorities in the UK is a lack of the correct insurance. Driving or parking your motorbike on public roads without the minimum legal insurance requirement can lead to your vehicle being impounded. Even if your bike is impounded for reasons other than insurance, you will discover that most standard temporary bike insurance policies will not offer you coverage during the impound period.

This is due to most temporary insurance policies only having coverage for a period of 28 days and most impounds won’t release your bike without a minimum of 30 days cover at the time of collection. An annual motorbike insurance policy will also not likely cover your bike for the time it is impounded.

Do you have to have impound insurance?

If you are to recover a vehicle from an impound you need to prove that you have at least 30 days insurance cover before pound will release your bike. Since insurers won’t cover your vehicle for the time that it is in an impound, so impound insurance can provide you with the cover you need quickly and easily.

What happens if I don’t take out motorbike impound insurance?

If you choose not to get any impound insurance, you will not have the option to recover your impounded motorbike. However, you will still be required to visit the impound to complete a procedure called ‘disclaiming.’ This process essentially involves formally declaring that you have no intention of reclaiming the vehicle.

To disclaim your vehicle, you must bring identification and proof of ownership to the impound lot. Additionally, you will be responsible for paying disposal fees, which are £96 for cars and vans, and £64 for motorbikes and scooters.
