The size of a property is one of the variables insurance providers use when calculating home insurance premiums, which means apartment insurance can sometimes work out a little cheaper than some other home insurance policies – particularly if you own a studio apartment or a one bedroom apartment rather than a huge four-bed penthouse.

The reason for that is fairly straightforward – smaller homes usually cost less to rebuild than larger properties, and the rebuild cost is one of the variables insurers use when calculating home insurance premiums.

Of course, the size of the home isn’t the only variable they use, and if your apartment happens to be located in a city centre or town centre where the crime rate is higher than average you could end paying more for your apartment insurance than someone who owns a four bedroom house in a small rural village might pay for their policy.

Insurance providers give different variables different weightings in their insurance premium calculations though, which is why it’s a good idea to compare quotes from a wide range of providers when you’re ready to insure your apartment.

Do I need apartment building insurance if I own the apartment?

That will usually depend on who the freeholder is. If you own a share of the freehold then you and your neighbours in the apartment building would probably have to take out a joint buildings insurance policy to insure your apartment building.

However, if you own your apartment on a leasehold basis then there’s a good chance the freeholder will insure the building, while you will be responsible for insuring your contents.

It’s worth double checking the terms of your leaseholder agreement to confirm that the freeholder has agreed to insure the building, though.

Do I need apartment insurance for a rental apartment?

If you rent your apartment from a landlord they will usually have to take out landlords’ insurance to cover the building and any contents they might provide to their tenants (assuming they rent it on a furnished basis), while you will have to take out tenants insurance (or basic apartment contents insurance) to protect your own belongings.

Does apartment insurance cover accidental damage?

No, whether you sign up for building and contents insurance or just contents insurance, most standard apartment insurance policies won’t pay out if your property or its contents are damaged accidentally.

However, it’s usually possible to add accidental damage cover to your apartment insurance as an optional extra, although you will usually have to pay a little more for this.

How can I find cheap apartment insurance?

First and foremost, you should shop around for the best deals and discounts by comparing apartment insurance quotes from a wide range of home insurance providers.

Beyond that, the following steps can sometimes result in cheaper apartment insurance:

  • Installing a home security system with alarms, glass-break sensors, and BSI-approved locks, which can help to reduce the premiums on both apartment insurance and apartment contents insurance policies
  • Agreeing to pay for the full year upfront, because annual policies are often cheaper than paying monthly.
