Rooster Car Insurance Review

Compare Rooster Car Insurance

Rooster car insurance utilises inbuilt sensors in your phone in order to better asses your behaviour as a driver. The reason for this is the company claims it is able to offer cheaper quotes for its customers by not insuring bad drivers who are likely to cause accidents.

Rooster’s approach to providing car insurance quotes essentially involves motorists downloading Rooster’s online app and driving for 3 weeks whilst their phone records key data using it’s inbuilt sensors. This data is then utilised by Rooster’s AI algorithm to determine a drivers risk.

Who are Rooster?

Rooster is a car insurance app that assesses your driving skills using sensors built into your phone along with AI analytics. Their mission statement is to offer a more fair quote system where good drivers can be rewarded and not penalised by higher premiums as a result of bad drivers pushing up premiums for everyone else.

How does the Rooster insurance app work?
  1. Download the app – Enter your licence details or take a photo of it and you’re ready to go
  2. Test your driving – Using sensors built into your phone to make a profile of your driving behaviour, the Rooster app monitors your driving for 3 weeks, depending on how often you drive, and then uses AI analysis to determine your risk profile. Rooster has stated that it does not sell any customer data to third-parties.
  3. Get your quote – Get your fully comprehensive cover and pay for your policy directly in the app. All test drives are valid for 18 months and quotes are valid for 60 days.

By not insuring bad drivers, Rooster claims it can pass on these savings to motorists through cheaper insurance premiums. By not insuring bad drivers, motorists can save up to 40% on their coverage according to Rooster.

Why your driving behaviour makes a difference

Good drivers are less likely to be involved in accidents and so are less likely to make a claim that costs the insurer money. As a result most traditional insurance companies will offer a no claims bonus for drivers who have not made any claims over a certain time period. For a typical example, if you don’t make a claim for over 5 years you’ll have 5 years worth of no claims bonus. Whilst this is good news for responsible drivers, there is still the issue that most traditional insurers will also offer insurance to bad drivers. This can result in increased premiums for everybody regardless as insurers look to make up the costs of payouts to bad drivers. With 30% of drivers making up 50% of car insurance claims, bad drivers can be a liability for those who act responsibly on the road.

What data does Rooster collect on my driving?

The Rooster app collects the following data using built-in sensors in your phone.

  • Braking
  • Speed
  • Use of phone while driving
  • Hours you drive
  • Turns
  • The type of roads you drive on

These key bits of data are used by Rooster in order to determine your risk as a driver.

How does Rooster use my data?

Rooster uses your data collected via the app to build a profile on your driving behaviour over a period of 3 weeks, although this will depend on how often you drive. From there Rooster will use AI to determine your risk profile and driving behaviours in order to offer you a fair price.

Rooster does not pass on or sell your data to third parties.

Rooster has received mainly positive reviews from customers with many praising their customer service and ease of process. There were a few negative reviews around the pricing of some policies as well as admin fees, however these were in the minority of cases and the majority were overall satisfied with Rooster.

How long is a Rooster test drive valid for?

Test drives on the Rooster app are valid for 18 months and quotes are considered valid for up to 30 days.
